La Barraca: A Timeless Struggle of Land and Identity at Teatro Cervantes

Experience a powerful theatrical adaptation of a Spanish literary masterpiece. As a highlight of the 43rd Theater Festival, Teatro de Malta, Pentación Espectáculos, and Olympia Metropolitana present La Barraca at the Teatro Cervantes in Málaga. This production, directed by the renowned Magüi Mira, brings Vicente Blasco Ibáñez’s immortal novel to the stage with an innovative and gripping narrative.

A Community Divided by Violence and Tradition

The story explores the eternal conflict between reason and violence within a fractured community. It follows the Borrull family and the tragic history of the Barret family’s eviction from their land. When Batiste’s family arrives as “intruders” to occupy the abandoned farmhouse, they face fierce rejection from neighbors who refuse to let the land be settled. Consequently, the play delves into themes of identity, rootedness, and the basic human need for water and survival.

An Innovative Three-Part Production

Playwright Marta Torres has structured this version into three evocative acts:

  • Past and Present: Unveiling the history of the land and the reasons behind the community’s hostility.

  • The Intrusors: Following Batiste’s family from their arrival to the tragic loss of their youngest son.

  • The Fire: A climactic finale where false peace shatters, and greed leads to a devastating end.

The production features a stellar cast including Daniel Albaladejo and Antonio Hortelano, supported by a unique group of “shadows” that personify the collective mass of neighbors.
