El sí de las niñas: A Contemporary Thriller at Teatro Echegaray

Experience a bold reimagining of a Spanish classic this season. The acclaimed company Jóvenes Clásicos presents El sí de las niñas at the Teatro Echegaray in Málaga. As a highlight of the 43rd Theater Festival, this production forms part of the “Teatro en Femenino” cycle. This initiative receives support from the City Council of Málaga’s Equality Department. On January 17 and 18, 2026, audiences can witness this transgenerational thriller that bridges the gap between the 19th century and the modern world.

From Neoclassical Comedy to Modern Crisis

Playwright María Beltrán draws free inspiration from Moratín’s original work to explore individual and social conscience. While the original story focused on arranged marriages, this contemporary version tackles modern issues. The plot examines the reality of “sugar babies,” the influence of social media, and the silence imposed on victims. Furthermore, it reflects a society that offers power in exchange for morality while ignoring inherited lack of empathy. Consequently, the play exposes the educational and social decay of a world seemingly destined for failure.

Award-Winning Local Talent

The Málaga-based company Jóvenes Clásicos specializes in bringing classic texts to modern audiences. José Carlos Cuevas directs this production, which was a finalist at the 2024 CINTA awards. The company has earned prestigious recognitions, including six Ateneo de Teatro awards and the Almagro OFF prize. In this production, actors Natalia Ruiz and Juan Antonio Hidalgo deliver a high-energy performance that questions our current reality.

In short, you should not miss this thought-provoking 70-minute journey. It is a unique chance to see how classic literature can still ignite vital conversations today.
