EL RETABLO DE LAS MARAVILLAS

Joglars Presents El Retablo de las Maravillas in Málaga
Experience a masterclass in satire as the legendary theater company Joglars brings their latest production to Teatro Cervantes. As part of the 43rd Theater Festival, this performance celebrates Joglars receiving the prestigious Málaga Theater Award 2026. On January 9 and 10, 2026, audiences can witness a sharp, contemporary adaptation of Miguel de Cervantes’ classic farce.
A Timeless Critique of Deception
Originally written by Cervantes, El Retablo de las Maravillas tells the story of swindlers who profit by showcasing a non-existent altarpiece. According to the trick, only those with “pure blood” and legitimate birth can see its wonders. Joglars takes this 16th-century premise and applies it to modern society. Their adaptation explores how fear and social complexes still allow for public scams in the worlds of art, politics, religion, and even gastronomy.
The Legacy of Joglars
Founded in 1961 by Albert Boadella, Joglars remains one of the most influential and longest-running theater companies in the world. The company holds the Spanish National Theater Prize and the Gold Medal for Merit in Fine Arts. For this production, the troupe features a stellar cast including Ramon Fontserè and Pilar Sáenz, under the artistic direction of Boadella himself. Furthermore, their satirical and provocative style continues to challenge and innovate after six decades on stage.
