Ronda is the classic first day trip from Marbella. Gibraltar is the easiest trip abroad. Granada needs the longest day. A group coach is the cheapest way to go. A private driver guide costs more per person, but starts at your door.

Marbella is a great base for southern Spain. In one to two hours you can be in a cliff top town, a British territory, a Moorish palace or a gorge walk. Tangier in Morocco is a long but possible day.
This guide keeps the tips from our original day trips page and adds what readers asked for: real tours, real prices and an honest choice between group and private. Every price and rating shows the date we checked it.

Group coach tours are the budget choice. You share a coach with up to about 55 people. The day follows a fixed plan with some free time.
Small group and VIP tours cap the group, often at 4 to 10 people. Some are private in all but name.
Private tours give you your own driver guide. Prices are per person and fall as your group grows, so they can make sense for a family of four.

Ronda sits on a cliff a short drive inland. A deep gorge splits the town in two, and the Puente Nuevo bridge joins the halves. The mountain road up gives views all the way.
Arrive before 10:00 to photograph the Puente Nuevo without the crowds. Then walk the path down into the gorge for the classic view up at the bridge.

Pair Ronda with a winery.
Gibraltar mixes British heritage with Mediterranean life. The Rock is the gateway to the Mediterranean. Come for the military tunnels, the shops on Main Street and views across the Strait to Morocco.
The border has changed. Since 15 July 2026 routine checks at the Border have ended under the new UK and EU treaty. You can walk across from La Línea. Carry your passport or EU ID card anyway. Traffic and parking in La Línea are now the main delay, so walking in is still the easy option.
Gibraltar uses pounds sterling. Some shops take euros. The cable car is closed for rebuilding and is expected to reopen in 2027. An adult Nature Reserve ticket costs £30.

Granada sits below the Sierra Nevada. It is home to the Alhambra, a Moorish palace and fortress with carved stucco, tiled halls and the water gardens of the Generalife.
Alhambra tickets are limited each day and the Nasrid Palaces sell out first. Book well ahead, or book a tour that includes tickets.

Seville is the capital of Andalucía. In one day you can see the Cathedral and Giralda tower, the Real Alcázar palace and Plaza de España.
It is one of the longest drives in this guide, so most people go by coach or with a private driver.

Tangier puts a new continent into one long day. Tours cross the Strait by ferry and walk you through the kasbah, the medina and the souks.
It is a 10 to 14 hour day. Take your passport and check Morocco’s entry rules for your nationality before you book.
Why only private tours here? No group Tangier tour from the coast passed our rating bar when we checked on 28 October 2026. The only group tour we found was rated 3.6 out of 5. These two private tours did. Both pick you up on the coast.

These trips are easy to do by car on your own. We have no tour cards here because none passed our quality bar for these towns.
Head east past Málaga for a double day. See the Nerja Caves, walk out to the Balcón de Europa over the sea, then drive up to the white streets of Frigiliana.
Drive time from Marbella: about 1 hour 30 minutes.
Do the caves first thing, have a coffee by the sea, then go up to Frigiliana for a slow village lunch.
Short on time? Mijas Pueblo clings to the hillside close to Marbella. It has the rock chapel of the Virgen de la Peña, ceramic shops and the Muralla viewpoint path.
Drive time from Marbella: about 30 minutes.
Skip the steep lanes. Park in the municipal car park at the village entrance and walk in.
Setenil is famous for white houses built into and under overhanging rock. Casares is a closer cliff village with a castle and deep valley views.
Drive time from Marbella: about 40 minutes to Casares and 1 hour 20 minutes to Setenil.
In Setenil, skip street parking. Use the car parks on the edge of town and explore the cave streets on foot. The Ronda group tour above also stops in Setenil.
Tours labelled Meet in Málaga start in the city centre. Check the exact meeting point on your booking, and allow time for traffic on the way in. Tours labelled Meet in Gibraltar, Ronda, Granada or Seville start in that town, so you need your own way there.
By bus: Avanza runs direct (L-307) and express (L-312) buses from Marbella bus station to Málaga bus station in about 45 minutes. The first bus leaves Marbella at 5:30 and goes via the airport. Check times and fares on avanzabus.com.
By train: Marbella has no railway station. The nearest is Fuengirola. From there the Cercanías C-1 takes about 45 minutes to Málaga Centro-Alameda.
By car: About 60 km and 45 minutes to central Málaga. Allow extra time at rush hour.
For families of four or more, compare the private price per person with four group tickets. Private tours set the pace around nap times and breaks. For more ideas see activities for young children in Marbella.
Best with kids: Nerja and Frigiliana. In the Nerja Caves, under 3s go free, ages 3 to 5 pay €5 and ages 6 to 11 pay €12 online. For younger children with less patience for the car, Mijas Pueblo is about 30 minutes away.
Marbella, Puerto Banús, Nueva Andalucía, Estepona and Benahavís each suit a different kind of trip.

Ronda, Gibraltar, Granada and the Alhambra, Seville, the Caminito del Rey and Tangier. Ronda and Gibraltar are the easiest. Nerja, Frigiliana, Mijas and Setenil are good shorter trips by car.
